When Vietnam veteran Peter Turnpu passed away, he did not have any surviving family members to attend his funeral. Leroy Wooster, the owner of the funeral home who received Turnpu, decided to use social media to invite members of the community to attend the funeral. About 1,000 people turned out to the funeral, the largest in the cemetery’s history.

After realizing Turnpu had no living family members to attend his funeral, Wooster said he did not want the veteran to be buried alone. Wooster posted about the funeral on Facebook, where it began being shared across other social media platforms and the rest of the internet. Wooster says he was pleasantly surprised by the outpouring of support the Vietnam veteran received as a result.

Wooster appeared on Fox and Friends over the weekend to discuss the funeral with Pete Hegseth. Hegseth, an Iraq War veteran, applauded the funeral home owner for honoring the Vietnam veteran. The funeral was held in southern New Jersey.
