Following attacks on two oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman, relations between the Trump administration and Iran appear to be at an all-time low. Earlier this week, the Japanese Kokuka Courageous and the Norwegian Front Altair were hit with explosives. American military personnel rescued the crew from the burning ships.

The US, Saudi Arabia, and UK are all accusing Iran of coordinating the attack. The Pentagon has released multiple videos allegedly showing Iranian troops attempting to remove some of their undetonated munitions from the water following the attack.

Iran has responded to the allegations by accusing the US and its allies of fabricating the entire incident. Iran’s United Nations mission called the attack a “mischievous plot” to disrupt the region.

The incident occurred on the same day Japanese Prime Minister Shinzō Abe met with Supreme Leader of Iran Ayatollah Khamenei in Iran. The meeting was intended to help ease tensions between Iran and the United States.

President Trump has directly blamed Iran for the attacks, calling the country “a nation of terror.” The Department of Defense will be deploying an additional thousand troops to the region in response to the turmoil.

The president hasn’t spoken much about the conflict, apart from of a recent interview on Fox News. Although President Trump frequently communicates on social media, he hasn’t directly addressed the issue on Twitter in recent weeks. However, he did briefly address reports that Iran has begun defying uranium stockpile limits and retweet comments from Marco Rubio.
