Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has rejected President Trump’s request to hold the State of the Union in the US House of Representatives. Earlier today, in a letter to Speaker Pelosi, President Trump formally expressed his intentions to hold the State of the Union in the Chamber of the US House of Representatives on the evening of January 29th. Shortly after, Pelosi responded with her own letter denying the president’s request.

In her letter to the president, Pelosi said she is refusing to allow the president to hold the State of the Union in the House due to the fact that the government remains shutdown. Although Pelosi had previously extended an invitation to the president while the government was already shutdown, on January 3rd to hold the State of the Union on the 29th, she now says she didn’t realize the government would still be shutdown when she made the invitation.

Last week, Pelosi suggested cancelling the State of the Union due to security concerns as a result of the government shutdown. However, the Trump administration and several government agencies strongly denied the allegations. Pelosi is now suggested that President Trump reschedule the State of the Union after the government has been reopened.

In response to Pelosi’s letter, President Trump said he was not surprised. He went on to say, “It’s really a shame what’s happening with the Democrats. They have become radicalized. They don’t want to see crime stop, which we can very easily do on the southern border.”

President Trump may hold the State of the Union in the US Senate instead, where Republicans hold a majority. House Speakers in Michigan and North Carolina have also offered their state capitals as alternative venues for the president’s speech. However, it now appears the State of the Union might have been cancelled, based on statements made by the president earlier today.
