Senator Rand Paul is currently in Russia as part of a diplomatic visit, personally delivering a letter from President Trump to the Russian government. The Kentucky Republican had this to say about his visit, “Engagement is vital to our national security and peace around the world. Today, I met with Chairman Kosachev, and we agreed on the importance of continued dialogue. I invited the Russian Federation to send a delegation to the Capitol, and they have agreed to take this important next step.”

Senator Paul further emphasized the importance of dialogue with other nations by tweeting:

“Diplomacy is not the opposite of toughness. It is the result of a clear-eyed understanding that foreign relations are painted in shades of gray, that negotiating with reprehensible people and regimes is often the least bad option.”

Although Senator Rand Paul ran against President Trump during the 2016 Republican primary, they appear to have formed a close relationship since then. Senator Paul has joined President Trump on the golf course numerous times since the election, and the president has tweeted favorably about the senator on multiple occasions.

Many in the media, and even some of his fellow Republicans, criticized the president following his recent meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Senator Paul was not one of those Republicans. Senator Paul strongly defended President Trump’s meeting with Putin, and even questioned the practicality of directly criticizing Putin for Russia’s alleged interference in the 2016 US presidential election.
