Senator Kamala Harris announced her 2020 presidential run earlier today while appearing on ABC’s Good Morning America. Harris said she was honored to make her announcement on Martin Luther King Day. Numerous media outlets have been speculating for months that Harris would soon announce her candidacy for the Democratic nomination for president.

Harris began her career as a deputy district attorney in California. In 2003, she was elected District Attorney of San Francisco. Harris was reelected to the position in 2007, but announced in 2008 that she would be seeking the office of California Attorney General.

Successful in her 2010 election, Harris became California’s first Jamaican-American and Indian-American attorney general in history. She was reelected in 2014. In early 2015, Harris announced she would be running for US Senate to replace Barbara Boxer, who was retiring.

Harris won the 2016 election, becoming a US Senator. California Governor Jerry Brown replaced Harris with Xavier Becerra as attorney general of the state. Since the election of President Trump, Harris has become a vocal critic of the administration. While announcing her 2020 candidacy on Good Morning America, Harris criticized the president numerous times.
