Earlier today, President Trump threatened Iran with “obliteration” in response to insulting comments from the Iranian regime. President of Iran Hassan Rouhani retaliated to yesterday’s announcement of further US sanctions by accusing the White House of being “afflicted by mental retardation.” The comment clearly did not sit well with President Trump, who unloaded a fury of menacing tweets toward Iran this morning.

The escalation in tensions follow President Trump’s recent disclosure that he decided to abort a military strike against Iran minutes before it was scheduled to begin. The president says he called off the attack when he learned 150 Iranians would likely die as a result, calling the proposed strike a disproportionate response. Instead, the Trump administration signed an executive order yesterday establishing a new wave economic sanctions against Iran.

In the past weeks, Iran has been accused of attacking numerous shipping vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. The Pentagon has released multiple photos and videos to support the accusations. The US has also accused Iran of shooting down an unmanned American surveillance drone.

Spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry Abbas Mousavi referred to the latest economic sanctions as a permanent end for diplomacy between the two nations. President Trump has repeatedly stated that he would prefer to avoid war with Iran. However, his tone seemed a bit different earlier today while talking to reporters. When asked about a potential war, President Trump suggested the damage to Iran would be so catastrophic that the conflict would not require an exit strategy.
