During a photo opportunity with the press, President Trump lightheartedly told Russian President Vladimir Putin not to meddle in the 2020 US election. The statement came in response to a question from a reporter. President Trump and Putin shared a laugh as the American President scolded his Russian counterpart.

Democratic presidential candidates and the president’s critics quickly piled on to condemn his comments. They strongly denounced the president for making light of the situation. Politicians and pundits on the left have spent quite a bit of time focused on accusations of collusion between the 2016 Trump campaign and Russia, and the president’s comments during the G20 summit seem to have fanned the flames.

Former Special Counsel Robert Mueller spent nearly two years investigating allegations of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia. The full report was submitted to Attorney General William Barr on March 22, 2019. A redacted version was made public less than a month later on April 18, 2019.

Democrats in Congress seem eager to further explore the issue.  Following a subpoena from House Democrats, Robert Mueller is set to testify to Congress on July 17. Mueller will speak before the House Judiciary Committee and the House Intelligence Committee in separate public appearances.

President Trump tweeted several times from the G20 summit, seemingly pleased with the event. He even extended an invitation to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un for a meeting at the DMZ.
