President Trump ignited another weekend controversy on Twitter when he attacked Congressman Elijah Cummings and his district in Baltimore. In the controversial series of tweets, the president called Cummings’ district a “rat and rodent infested mess.” Earlier this month, the president created a similar firestorm when he targeted freshman Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and her allies in a string of weekend tweets.

The president’s feud with Cummings seems to stem from comments the congressman made about the Border Patrol. In his first tweet attacking Cummings, President Trump accused the congressman of bullying and mistreating border staff. The president went on to suggest that living conditions in Cummings’ district are “far worse and more dangerous” than those on the southern border.

Critics of the president immediately jumped to the defense of Cummings and his district. Similar to what happened with the president’s comments about Ocasio-Cortez and her allies, some Republicans were willing to cross party lines to publicly condemned the president’s tweets. Although, that didn’t stop the president from doubling down on his comments later that evening.
