President Trump announced today that he has decided to postpone the State of the Union until the government reopens. Yesterday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi denied President Trump’s request to hold the State of the Union in the Chamber of the US House of Representatives. This is the first time in American history that the Speaker of the House has refused the president’s request to hold the State of the Union in the House.

Pelosi had previously invited the president to deliver his speech in the House of Representatives, and offered the invitation after the government was already shutdown. The State of the Union was scheduled for Tuesday, January 29th. In her written response to the president yesterday, Pelosi said she did not realize the government would still be shutdown when she originally made the offer.

President Trump was unimpressed with Pelosi’s behavior, and had this to say late last night on Twitter:

“As the Shutdown was going on, Nancy Pelosi asked me to give the State of the Union Address. I agreed. She then changed her mind because of the Shutdown, suggesting a later date. This is her prerogative – I will do the Address when the Shutdown is over. I am not looking for an alternative venue for the SOTU Address because there is no venue that can compete with the history, tradition and importance of the House Chamber. I look forward to giving a “great” State of the Union Address in the near future!”

Pelosi had previously suggested canceling the the State of the Union due to security concerns as a result of the government shutdown. However, the Trump administration and numerous government agencies rejected Pelosi’s claim. Considering the current stalemate in congress over the shutdown, are unlikely to hear the State of the Union speech anytime soon.
