Earlier today, President Trump met with the families of four Americans killed during an ISIS suicide bombing in Syria. The meeting between the president and relatives of the victims took place at the Dover Air Force Base in Delaware. After the meeting, President Trump attended the dignified transfer of one of the Americans killed during the attack. The president saluted the flag-draped casket as it was transferred.

Before making the trip to Dover, President Trump discussed the attack with reporters. The president stressed that the bombing, conducted by a single man, should not be interpreted as a sign of strength by the terrorist organization. He went on to say that there will always be some terrorists in Syria, but it doesn’t justify keeping US troops in the country indefinitely.

The United States has been combating ISIS in Syria for over four years. When the offensive against the terror group began, ISIS controlled vast amounts of land. They killed with impunity, and uploaded endless videos of their carnage online. It is indisputable that enormous progress has been made against the terror group since US operations began.

Nearly one month after President Trump announced the withdraw of US forces from Syria, an ISIS suicide bomber murdered four Americans and fifteen others in the country. The suicide bomber detonated an explosive vest, cowardly killing the Americans as they gathered at a restaurant. Three US troops were also injured in the attack.

After meeting with President Trump earlier this week, Senator Rand Paul said the president remains committed to bringing troops home from the Middle East. To many advocates of the troop withdrawal, the latest attack demonstrates exactly why the US should bring its forces home from the region. As long as the United States keeps soldiers in these combat zones, they will be exposed to similar attacks.
