President Trump continued his attack on freshman Congresswomen Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and her allies during his rally in North Carolina on Wednesday night. The president wasn’t backing down from his recent controversial statements, continuing to suggest the members of Congress leave the US if they’re unhappy with it. Although, President Trump did express disapproval today toward some of his supporters for chanting “send her home” during the event in reference to Ilhan Omar.
Congresswomen Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, and Ayanna Pressley have been publicly feuding with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and President Trump since their decision earlier this month to vote against emergency humanitarian funding toward the border. The freshman Democrats were the only members of the US House of Representatives to vote against the bill. However, the rift between the congresswomen and House Speaker Pelosi appears to be shrinking since President Trump launched a barrage of tweets Sunday morning criticizing the group of women.
During his rally, President Trump condemned the congresswomen for sharing what he described as “anti-American” attitudes. “Let ’em leave… they’re always telling us how to run it, how to do this, how to do that. You know what? If they don’t love it, tell ’em to leave it,” President Trump told the crowd of supporters.
Singling out Omar, President Trump accused her of smearing US military members involved in the “Black Hawk Down” incident. He also accused Omar, a Somali refugee, of sympathizing with Al Qaeda.
Congresswoman Tlaib, well-known for the colorful statements she made while advocating for President Trump’s impeachment, was another target of the president. “[She] used the F-word to describe the presidency and the president,” Trump said during his rally. “That’s not nice, even for me… That’s not somebody who loves our country.”
While speaking about Pressley, the president referenced the congresswoman’s recent controversial statements about race. During a conference over the weekend, Pressley said, “We don’t need any more brown faces that don’t want to be a brown voice.” Trump repeated her comments to the crowd, suggesting she “thinks that people with the same skin color all need to think the same.”
The president was perhaps most critical of Ocasio-Cortez. He repeatedly accused the congresswoman of anti-American and anti-capitalist sentiments, even mocking her for having three names. President Trump referred to her simply as “Cortez,” saying it’s not worth the time to use more than one of her names.
Unsurprisingly, the president’s opponents have been expressing outrage at the comments. In what was quite possibly the most controversial moment of the night, the crowd began chanting “send her home” in reference to Ilhan Omar. Earlier today at the White House, President Trump disavowed the chants from the crowd.
