Earlier today, President Trump confirmed reports that he called off a military strike against Iran just ten minutes before it was scheduled to begin. The president said the retaliation by US forces would have been disproportionate to Iran’s actions. Earlier this month, the Iranian military allegedly attacked oil tankers of two US allies and shot down an American drone.

The president tweeted about the incident early this morning, saying the planned strike was in direct response to Iranian aggression against the unmanned drone. The attack was set to target three separate sites, but President Trump says he decided against the move after asking how many would die as a result. According to the tweets this morning, the president was told by a general that around 150 Iranians would be killed.

President Trump further explained his reasoning this morning, tweeting that sanctions are likely be sufficient in dealing with the rogue nation. Either way, the president made it clear that he was unwilling to kill 150 people over an unmanned drone.

During a recent press conference, President Trump suggested the attack on the drone may not have been ordered by top Iranian officials. He proposed the strike may have simply been the actions of a low-ranking military official, unaware of the severity of the situation.

While tweeting about his decision this morning, President Trump lashed out at the terms of the nuclear deal with Iran negotiated by the Obama administration. He went on to accuse the previous administration of emboldening Iran’s behavior in the region.
