President Trump and London Mayor Sadiq Khan have reignited their rivalry during the president’s visit to the UK. Just prior to President Trump’s visit, Khan wrote an article for the Guardian titled, “It’s un-British to roll out the red carpet for Donald Trump.” Before President Trump’s plane had even landed, he was already attacking Khan on Twitter.

UK Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt was also critical of Khan for writing the piece, which compares Trump to European fascist dictators,  ahead of the president’s visit. Hunt said it was inappropriate for anyone to boycott a visit by the President of the United States. He went on to stress that the visit is not a political visit, but rather a state visit hosted by Queen Elizabeth.

President Trump and Mayor Khan previously engaged in a very public feud in 2017. The president was highly critical of Khan’s reaction to multiple terrorist attacks in the UK. Khan told London residents there was no reason to be alarmed following a terrorist attack in London that killed 8 and a suicide bombing two weeks earlier in Manchester that killed 22.

Supporters of Mayor Khan say the president took his words out of context, as Khan was suggesting citizens should not be alarmed about an increase in police presence. However, critics contend that such a distinction is irrelevant to criticism of Khan, considering the police presence was a direct result of the danger posed by potential future attacks.
