The results of Sunday’s Fox News town hall event with Pete Buttigieg appear to have been a success for the network and the candidate. The 2020 hopeful reached more viewers than MSNBC and CNN combined in the same time slot. Buttigieg is the third Democratic presidential candidate to appear on Fox News for such an event.

The town hall reached about 1.1 million viewers. In comparison, CNN’s Newsroom brought in less than 450,000 viewers. MSNBC’s Kasie DC did slightly better than CNN, bringing in just over 600,000. Buttigieg more than doubled his audience from a previous town hall style event on CNN in March.

Buttigieg’s ratings weren’t quite as good as Bernie Sanders or Amy Klobuchar’s Fox News town halls. However, both of the previous Democratic events took place on a weekday. Buttigieg’s was the network’s first weekend presentation.

Many on the left were critical of Sanders for appearing on Fox News when the announcement was originally made. However, once it became clear how many viewers were tuning in, many opinions were changed about appearing on the network. Nearly 2.6 million viewers tuned into Sanders’ town hall. Klobuchar earned an impressive 1.6 million viewers for her event.

Not all the 2020 candidates have been so welcoming of the news network, regardless of their ratings. Elizabeth Warren has strongly condemned Fox News for various reasons, saying she has no interest in appearing on the network.

The DNC announced in March that Fox News would be banned from hosting any of the 2020 Democratic debates. As a result, Fox News’ town hall events seem to be the best way for Democratic candidates to reach out the network’s vast audience. The first Democratic debate will take place in Miami on June 26th and 27th as a joint presentation between NBC, MSNBC, and Telemundo.
