Last week, Defense Secretary Mark Esper approved $3.6 billion toward the construction of barriers along the southern border. The funds will be used to build an additional 175 miles of border wall between the United States and Mexico. The decision was met with significant criticism from Democratic politicians on Capital Hill.

“Earlier today Defense Secretary Mark Esper notified me that the Department of Defense will reprogram $3.6 billion in funds appropriated for military construction and maintenance, including the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, in order to build the president’s misguided border wall,” read a statement from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

Democratic Senator Jack Reed joined Schumer in condemning the move. “President Trump’s immigration efforts have failed since Day 1,” Senator Reed said in response to the decision. “Today, he made it clear he is willing to take funds from our troops and disaster victims and divert them to try to protect his political right flank. And ultimately, that could put Americans at risk.”

President Trump, on the other hand, welcomed the development. While speaking to reporters last week, the president said he expects nearly 500 miles of barriers to be built by the end of next year. “We’re building different sections simultaneously,” Trump told reporters.

Lower courts had previously blocked the use of the funds amid various legal battles. However, the Supreme Court approved their use last month. All five conservative justices voted in favor of the Trump administration, with the four liberal justices opposing the decision.

“Construction continues on the border wall in Yuma, AZ,” read a tweet from the Customs and Border Patrol following the announcement. “The process includes panel fabrication and delivery, demolition, soil conditioning and digging, trench digging, panel hoisting and installation.”
