During a Friday morning appearance on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced his departure from the 2020 Democratic primary. The mayor failed to qualify for the previous Democratic debate. Based on his polling numbers, it seemed likely that de Blasio would fail reach the required threshold to appear in the next debate.

“I feel like I contributed all I can to this primary election and it’s clearly not my time,” the New York City Mayor said during the interview. “So I’m going to end my presidential campaign, continue my work as mayor of New York City and I’m going to keep speaking up for working people.”

President Trump reacted to the news by mocking de Blasio’s campaign. “Oh no, really big political news, perhaps the biggest story in years!” President Trump tweeted. “Part time Mayor of New York City, [Bill de Blasio], who was polling at a sold ZERO but had tremendous room for growth, has shocking dropped out of the Presidential race. NYC is devastated, he’s coming home!”

This isn’t the first time President Trump has attacked de Blasio via Twitter. Shortly after the New York City Mayor announced his campaign, Trump tweeted, “He is a JOKE, but if you like high taxes & crime, he’s your man. NYC HATES HIM!”

Earlier this week, iconic New York City resident Billy Crystal encouraged de Blasio to drop out of the race. “De Blasio, what are you doing in Iowa? You’re going nowhere, come back and clean up this city,” Crystal said while appearing on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
