Monica Lewinsky will produce FX’s third season of American Crime Story. The latest season will focus on Bill Clinton’s infamous affair in the White House and the resulting impeachment hearings. The show is set to air just prior to the 2020 presidential election.

Numerous journalists and political pundits have condemned FX’s decision to air the program during the height of the 2020 presidential election. Some have even suggested that the show could potentially influence the election in Donald Trump’s favor. However, FX chairman John Landgraf has brushed off the criticism.

Landgraf remains undeterred in the timing of the show’s release. While speaking at a recent press tour, Landgraf defended the decision. “People are going to be very interested in this right around the presidential election and it’s going to be a great show,” Landgraf told reporters.

New York Magazine writer Mark Harris expressed frustration with FX for their decision. “Airing this during the final six weeks of the 2020 election is an abysmal idea. I’m looking forward to seeing it, and I hope FX reconsiders the timing,” he wrote on Twitter. “There is nothing that Trump would like more than to turn the homestretch of 2020 into a revisitation of the Clintons. Don’t do this, [FX]. It’s a disservice to our fragile political system and to the talented people involved in this show.”

Lewinsky will be played by actress Beanie Felstein, Jonah Hill’s younger sister. American Horror Story alum Sarah Paulson will star as Linda Tripp. Annaleigh Ashford, who appeared in the second season of American Crime Story, will play Paula Jones.

American Crime Story is a spin-off of FX’s American Horror Story. American Crime Story is produced by Brad Falchuk and Ryan Murphy, the creators of American Horror Story. Each season American Crime Story has been based on a book depicting the events of a notorious legal case.

The first season of the show was based off The Run of His Life: The People v. O. J. Simpson by Jeffrey Toobin. The second season retold Maureen Orth’s Vulgar Favors: Andrew Cunanan, Gianni Versace, and the Largest Failed Manhunt in U.S. History. This season will be based on Jeffrey Toobin’s A Vast Conspiracy: The Real Story of the Sex Scandal That Nearly Brought Down a President.

American Crime Story has garnered fairly universal praise from critics since it first aired in 2016. Although the show’s second season was not quite as well received as the first, both seasons of the show have each earned more than a dozen Emmy nominations.
