Liberal Professor Finds Common Ground With Tucker Carlson Over Gun Control

Left-leaning University of Maryland professor Jason Nichols appeared on Tucker Carlson’s Fox News program today to discuss gun control. Although Nichols and Carlson disagree on nearly every political issue imaginable, the two found some common ground on the topic of gun control. Nichols invoked historic events as he urged restraint against the concept of confiscating firearms in the United States.

While the professor was willing to support some gun control measures, such as magazine capacity limits, he cautioned against more drastic proposals. Numerous Democratic politicians and pundits have been advocating for an outright ban on semi-automatic rifles, suggesting the federal government institute a “buy-back” program. Nichols rejected such ideas, invoking historical examples of gun control being used to disarm black Americans.

“When you look at the history of the issue, I think African-American people should be a little leery about people wanting to come around and take their guns,” the professor told Carlson. “Gun confiscation goes way too far. When we look at the history of gun control in this country, it has been to keep guns out of the hands of black people.”

Nichols teaches African-American studies and identifies as a Democrat. He has appeared on Carlson’s Fox News program several times. During the most recent interview, Carlson asked Nichols if he expects a backlash from his latest comments on the program. Nichols responded by saying he faces criticism from both the left and the right whenever he appears on Carlson’s show.
