Former vice president Joe Biden is expected to announce his 2020 presidential campaign sometime next week. The story was first reported by The Atlantic, with the Associated Press later citing three sources confirming the report. According to recent polling, Biden appears to be the front runner among the 2020 Democratic field.

Biden’s announcement will put him among a crowded field of candidates, including numerous senators and members of Congress. Of the declared candidates, Bernie Sanders appears to be in the lead so far. The senator from Vermont has been trailing closely behind Biden in recent polls.

Sanders and Biden are among the two most experienced politicians campaigning for the Democratic nomination. Sanders is 77 years old, with Biden just a year younger. Their age has already been a target of their opponents, a criticism likely to continue from the younger candidates throughout the Democratic primaries.

Early polling, however, likely won’t mean much until after the first Democratic debate. Considering how many candidates are in the race, the first two debates will be split into two separate events. Half the candidates will appear on the first night and the other half on the following night.

The first Democratic debate will be held in Miami as a joint presentation sponsored by NBC, MSNBC, and Telemundo. The debates will be held on June 26th and 27th. The next debate will be held in Detroit by CNN on July 30th and 31st. The following debates will likely require a higher threshold of support for candidates, limiting the debates to a single night.

Biden has recently faced accusations of inappropriate touching, with several women coming forward to say the former vice president made them feel uncomfortable. Biden initially addressed the allegations but has faced criticism by some for making light of the situation since then. It seems likely the accusations will continue to follow Biden throughout the campaign trail as his opponents attempt to derail his support.
