Iran is clearly attempting to antagonize the US and its allies with the release of new footage showing the Iranian Revolutionary Guard hijacking a British oil tanker. Iranian commandos captured the ship on Friday after repelling from a helicopter. The 23-person crew is still being held by Iran.

Two British-owned tankers were captured by Iran on Friday but one of the tankers was released shortly after. Iran’s behavior seems to be in response to severe economic pressure from sanctions. The general political consensus is that Iran is attempting to drive up oil prices by causing turmoil in the region.

The UK seized an Iranian oil tanker earlier this month, delivering yet another devastating blow to the regime. Authorities have accused the vessel of violating EU sanctions on oil shipments to Syria, and the ship is unlikely to ever return to Iran.

Observers have pointed out that Iran’s raid on the British ship appears to have been planned in advance, with video cameras set to record from different angles. Iran asserts the British oil tanker struck an Iranian shipping vessel, which then requested help from the Iranian military, a claim no one is taking seriously.

Earlier this week, the US Navy employed an electronic jamming technique to drop an Iranian drone from the sky. While speaking to the press on Friday, President Trump called Iran “nothing but trouble” and suggested the regime is simply responding to the economic pain caused by international sanctions.

Around 2,000 shipping companies operate in the Persian Gulf. Several of the businesses have begun ordering their vessels to transit the Strait of Hormuz only during the daytime and at high speed. However, very few of the companies have halted their operations in the region altogether.
