Yesterday concluded CNN’s two-night debate held in Detroit, Michigan. While the first evening of the debate received relatively universal praise, the second evening was plagued with audio issues and a much more lenient attitude toward candidates overextending their speaking time. Aside from criticism of CNN’s handling of the event, the debate featured some of the most explosive confrontations between the candidates so far.

The second evening of CNN’s debate drew a larger audience than the first. A combination of figures from CNN’s digital data and Nielsen ratings suggests the event was watched by a total of 11.3 million people across television and streaming devices. The first night of the debate drew an estimated 9.2 million viewers.

Perhaps the increase in ratings was due to the inclusion of Democratic front-runner Joe Biden in the second evening. Biden is polling significantly ahead of his opposition in the race. In fact, the former vice president is polling at more than twice the support of his next closest opponent on the stage.

Last night’s debate featured candidates Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, Cory Booker, Julián Castro, Andrew Yang, Tulsi Gabbard, Kirsten Gillibrand, Jay Inslee, Michael Bennet, and Bill de Blasio. If you combined the polling numbers of every other candidate on the stage last night, Biden would still be ahead by a large margin. While Biden was expected to be the target of attacks throughout the evening, the most damning attack of the night may have come from Gabbard toward Harris.
