The first evening of CNN’s Democratic debates took place Tuesday night in Detroit, Michigan. The format and moderation of the debate seems to be receiving fairly universal praise in comparison to the debate hosted by NBC last month. Unlike the NBC debate, CNN moderators were quite strict with their time restraints and efforts to prevent the candidates from speaking over one another.

According to a combination of CNN’s data and Nielsen ratings, the first night of the debate averaged 9.2 million television and streaming viewers. Last month’s NBC debate averaged about 15 million viewers, although that debate was televised on a major broadcasting network. The first GOP debate of 2015 attracted about 24 million viewers.

The first night of the debate featured candidates Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Pete Buttigieg, Beto O-Rourke, Amy Klobuchar, John Hickenlooper, Tim Ryan, John Delaney, Marianne Williamson, and Steve Bullock. Sanders leads the pack in polling by a fairly significant number. He is followed by Warren, Buttigieg, and O’Rourke. The other candidates on the stage have much lower polling numbers.

Candidates discussed issues such as universal healthcare, gun control, and border security. Most of the conflict during the debate seemed to stem over disagreements about health insurance coverage. Surprising many political pundits, Marianne Williamson was the most Googled candidate following the debate.
