Original Ghostbusters star Dan Aykroyd has been trying to produce a sequel to the original two films for decades. Finally, Ghostbusters 3 has been given the green light by Sony Pictures. The film’s director, Jason Reitman, released a short teaser trailer earlier this week.

Jason Reitman is the son of Ivan Reitman, the director of the first two films. The new Ghostbusters sequel will feature members of the original cast. Dan Aykroyd is currently finishing the script, and the film is scheduled for release in the Summer of 2020.

Loyal fans of the Ghostbusters franchise have been eagerly awaiting a sequel since 1989’s Ghostbusters II. Many fans were devastated when Sony decided to reboot the franchise with new characters in 2016, losing all hope of a third Ghostbusters film. The main cast of the original Ghostbusters were contractually obligated by Sony to appear for cameos in the 2016 reboot. The movie was met with enormous backlash from fans of the original films.

Ghostbusters 3 will not include any of the characters or story lines from the 2016 reboot, which is welcome news to fans of the franchise.  Aykroyd has previously suggested that the Ghostbusters travel to Hell in the third film, and it will be interesting to see if that ends up making it onto the screen. It’s safe to say fans can expect numerous entertaining surprises when the film is finally released, and it’s comforting to know that production is back in the hands of the creative team behind the original films.

Unfortunately, original cast member Harold Ramis passed away in 2014. Ramis played Eagon Spengler, and co-wrote both films with Dan Aykroyd. Ramis and Aykroyd had been discussing ideas about a potential sequel for over 20 years. It’s likely many of Ramis’ ideas will end up in the final script, and it wouldn’t be surprising if he winds up credited as a co-writer for the film.
