Early this morning, the FBI and local law enforcement arrested former 2016 Trump campaign advisor Roger Stone at his home in Florida. CNN was on the ground to film the incident as it unfolded, showing law enforcement officers armed with automatic rifles carrying out the arrest. Stone was later released from custody on a $250,000 bond this afternoon.

Stone was indicted by a grand jury on seven counts. Five of the counts pertain to allegedly providing investigators with false information. One count alleges obstruction of an official proceeding, and another concerns witness tampering.

Stone is alleged to have had prior knowledge about the release of Hillary Clinton’s campaign chairman John Podesta’s emails by Wikileaks. He is also alleged to have threatened another individual involved in the investigation, encouraging him to lie to investigators. Stone has denied the allegations.

After being released from custody earlier today, Stone had this to say in response to the charges:

“I will plead not guilty to these charges. I will defeat them in court. I believe this is a politically-motivated investigation. I am troubled by the political motivations of the prosecutors, and as I have said previously, there is no circumstance whatsoever under which I will bear false witness against the president. Nor will I make up lies to ease the pressure on myself. I look forward to being fully and completely vindicated.”

Many have been highly critical of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation, which has lasted nearly two years. The investigation was launched to look into allegations of collusion between the Trump 2016 presidential campaign and Russia. However, so far, none of the resulting charges from the investigation pertain to collusion with Russia.

Earlier today, Harvard Law Professor Alan Dershowitz said the indictment of Stone demonstrates an absence of evidence concerning alleged collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia. Dershowitz noted that none of the charges against members of the Trump campaign relate to collusion with Russia. Hunter Pollack, whose sister was murdered during the Stoneman Douglass school shooting, noted the stark difference between the FBI’s response to Stone and its response to threats made by the deranged individual who attacked his school.
