It has been 25 years since the first Doom game was released on IBM-compatible computers. The popular franchise has sold over 10 million copies since then. Doom Eternal, the fifth main title in the franchise, hits store shelves November 22, 2019.

The Doom series puts players in control of an unnamed space marine, affectionately nicknamed Doomguy. The helmeted hero wields a variety of weapons against his demonic opponents, making for a fast-paced and gory first-person shooter.

The game’s story line is unusual, to say the least. Astronauts on Mars discover a portal to Hell, which they begin to mine resources and energy from. Naturally, the portal is eventually overrun by demons.

Doom Eternal is a direct sequel to the 2016 reboot of the franchise. The previous game featured environments on Mars and in Hell. The new title is likely to add Earth to the list of surroundings.

The game is being developed by id Software, also known for their involvement in the Wolfenstein series. The company developed Wolfenstein 3D, considered one of the most ground breaking games ever made. Released one year before the first Doom game, Wolfenstein 3D shares many of the same features.

Although id Software now owns the Wolfenstein franchise as well, they do not develop the games. Their development is handled by MachineGames, a Swedish subsidiary of id Software’s parent company.

The recent Doom reboot was a fun and faithful adaptation of the classic shooter. Let’s hope the team at id Software delivers another nostalgia filled gem later this year. The game will be available on the Playstation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC this holiday season.
