Bob Lord, the DNC’s chief security officer, sent a memo warning party members and campaign workers not use Huawei or ZTE Phones. Lord said the phones should not be used for business or even personal purposes. The warning comes after the DNC became aware that one of its organizations was considering purchasing ZTE phones.

Earlier this year, federal officials warned about security threats concerning these phones. Several US intelligence agencies have testified that both Huawei and ZTE are beholden to the Chinese government. They have also expressed concern that these devices may be used to spy on users and collect sensitive information. In 2012, the US House Intelligence Committee accused both companies of being a serious threat to national security.

The Pentagon ordered US military bases to stop selling the phones in May of 2018. Pentagon spokesman Major Dave Eastburn had this to say about the phones, “Huawei and ZTE devices may pose an unacceptable risk to Department’s personnel, information and mission. In light of this information, it was not prudent for the Department’s exchanges to continue selling them to DoD personnel.”
