Nearly every 2020 Democrat will be in attendance at the Iowa State Fair this weekend. The candidates are eager to make an impression among voters gathered at the event. Iowa has the distinction of being the first state in the country to vote in the presidential primary season.

A strong showing in Iowa can help propel a presidential candidate to success. On the other hand, a poor performance at the polls can act like a “kiss of death” for a candidate’s campaign. In the world of politics, first impressions can be quite important.

While most states conduct presidential elections like any other, Iowa and a few others employ a caucus system. Instead of voters simply casting ballots at a polling location, caucuses involve communities coming together to discuss the election before publicly casting their votes. Nevada, another early voting state, also conducts presidential elections via caucuses.

The Iowa State Fair has been attracting presidential candidates since the 1950s. Each candidate will be given the opportunity to speak to the crowd for 20 minutes. The podium for the event is fondly referred to by Iowans as the “political soapbox.”

The fair features games and carnival rides, but the real attraction is the food. Businesses from across the state will be flooding the event with a wide variety of things to eat. This year, the fair is featuring 69 different items available to eat on a stick. Countless other foods will be available to eat traditionally from plates and bowls.

Candidates and visitors alike can wash down the festival’s food with an assortment of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. One of those options will be the Corn Dog Ale, a beer brewed using over 150 pounds of hot dog buns and cornbread.

Candidates Tulsi Gabbard and Cory Booker will be steering clear of some of the fair’s food this weekend. Gabbard is a vegetarian and Booker is a vegan. However, there will be plenty of options at the fair for them to partake in.
