Earlier this week, Democratic presidential candidate Cory Booker indicated that his 2020 campaign might soon be ending. In a memo to campaign staff, the US Senator said his campaign must raise an additional $1.7 million by the end of the month in order to continue. Some political insiders have suggested that Booker may end his campaign as early as next week.

“This isn’t an end-of-quarter stunt or another one of those memos from a campaign trying to spin the press,” Booker wrote on Twitter. “This is a real, unvarnished look under the hood of our operation at a level of transparency unprecedented in modern presidential campaigns.”

Not everyone is convinced that Booker’s claims are true. Multiple pundits have accused the senator of “crying wolf” in an attempt to raise money from donors. According to skeptics, it seems unlikely that Booker would consider ending his campaign before appearing in the next Democratic debate, which he has already qualified for.

As a matter of fact, according to Fox News, two sources from within the Booker campaign have accused the senator of making the claim as part of a fundraising gimmick. In the memo issued to campaign staff, campaign manager Addisu Demissie admitted they’ve received fewer donations than expected in September.

Considering Booker raised just $4.5 million in the entire second quarter of April to June, it seems unlikely that he will receive an additional $1.7 million before the end of the month. Contrary to Booker’s recent statements, the future of his campaign might depend much more on his performance at the next debate rather than his current fundraising goals.
