Congresswoman Ilhan Omar Retweets Comments Justifying Violence Against Senator Rand Paul

Freshman Congresswoman Ilhan Omar is facing criticism for retweeting statements justifying violence toward Senator Rand Paul. Omar’s retweet seems to be in response to comments from Paul earlier in the week. Critics of Omar call her endorsement of assault particularly egregious considering the numerous times she has suggested that President Trump’s comments toward her could incite violence.

Unlike Omar, President Trump never actually attempted to justify or encourage violence toward a member of Congress. He did, however, encourage Omar to return to her “country of origin” in a series of tweets earlier this month. Paul shared similar sentiments, saying he would contribute airfare for Omar to visit her birthplace of Somalia and reflect on her past comments.

In response to the criticism, Omar retweeted statements about Paul from actor Tom Arnold. In the tweet, Arnold justified a 2017 assault on Paul that left him with 6 broken ribs and a bruised lung. Arnold said it’s “no wonder” the attack occurred, considering Paul’s “lying cowardly circular whiney bullcrap.”

Paul was attacked from behind while mowing his lawn. The attacker was originally charged in a Kentucky state court but the case was later brought before a federal court. Less than six months prior to the assault, Paul was shot at during the 2017 Congressional baseball attack that severely wounded Congressman Steve Scalise and several others.

Omar’s critics have pointed out the danger in justifying violence against Paul, especially considering he was already involved in a shooting carried out by a politically inspired left-wing fanatic. Even some of Omar’s own supporters are uncomfortable with the comments, and some have accused Omar of essentially handing the president and his allies the moral victory in the feud. Omar has not responded to criticism and she has yet to delete her retweet.

Here is Omar’s retweet along with Paul’s tweet that appears to have started the feud:
