Congressman Matt Gaetz feuded with Fox News’ Jeanine Pirro on Saturday over the topic of gun control. Although the Republican Congressman and conservative TV host tend to agree on most political issues, they were miles apart on the subject of mandatory background checks. While Gaetz was willing to consider some forms of new legislation on firearms, he repeatedly rejected Pirro’s emotional plea for universal background checks.

Within the first moments of the interview, Pirro already managed to evoke a scathing rebuke from Gaetz. The congressman’s reaction came following comments from Pirro advocating gun control measures similar to Australia’s. The Australian government banned and confiscated most of the country’s privately owned firearms in 1996, leading Gaetz to condemn the suggestion.

Throughout the interview, Gaetz claimed that expanded background checks would do little, if anything, to combat mass shootings. Instead, Gaetz argued, expanded background checks would inconvenience law-abiding citizens. Many Second Amendment advocates contend that expanded background checks would essentially criminalize the sale or transfer of firearms between private individuals, creating criminals out of otherwise innocent people.

Pirro isn’t the only Fox host to advocate extensive gun control measures. Earlier this month, Trish Regan shocked many of her loyal viewers when she endorsed an “assault weapon” ban. Going even further, Regan suggested the National Rifle Association and its members were somehow responsible for last weekend’s mass shootings.

Judging by the Twitter response Regan has received, many Fox News viewers seem extremely unhappy with her comments. In fact, nearly every recent comment directed toward Regan on Twitter has been negative. While ratings data for Fox Business is difficult to obtain, it seems likely that Regan has turned away many of her longtime viewers.

Similar to what occurred with Regan, Pirro’s viewers have been expressing their displeasure via Twitter. Although, Regan’s comments toward the NRA and its members were significantly more provocative than the opinions expressed by Pirro on Saturday. As for her weekend interview with Gaetz, Pirro made sure to extend an olive branch to the congressman before the segment ended.
