According to recent reports, Rep. Elijah Cummings suffered an attempted break-in at his home just hours before the congressman and his district were attacked by President Trump on Twitter. In the tweets, the president called Cummings’ district “a disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess.” The feud has been raging ever since, with Trump tweeting sarcastic condolences toward Cummings following news of the attempted burglary.

The attempted break-in occurred just before 4:00 a.m. The assailant managed to enter the first-floor hallway of the congressman’s building but did not make it into the living areas. A security system in Cummings’ three-story West Baltimore home alerted him to the intruder.

“I was notified of the intrusion by my security system, and I scared the intruder away by yelling before the person gained entry into the residential portion of the house,” Cummings said on Friday. The congressman rents the third floor of his home to a tenant, although it’s unclear if the renter was home at the time.

In response to news of the attempted burglary, President Trump mocked the situation. “Really bad news! The Baltimore house of Elijah Cummings was robbed,” the president wrote on Twitter. “Too bad!”

The feud between the president and Cummings began last Saturday when Trump fired off a series to tweets targeting the congressman and his district. Although statements in the tweets suggest the attack was inspired by Cummings’ comments about conditions along the border, some have speculated that the reaction has more to do with Cummings’ frequent criticism of the president. Numerous politicians and pundits across the political spectrum have condemned the president’s statements.

Much like last month’s feud with freshman Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and her allies, President Trump does not appear to be backing down. Rejecting claims of racism from his critics, the president has addressed the controversy numerous times to reporters and via Twitter. In the past week, the president has posted numerous videos depicting appalling examples of poverty and devastation in areas across Baltimore.
