Former Vice President Joe Biden appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert last night to discuss his campaign. The 20-minute extended interview covered a wide range of topics. Throughout the interview, Biden repeatedly defended himself from criticism of his gaffes along the campaign trail.

At one point, Colbert listed several of Biden’s campaign missteps. After providing several examples, the late-night host asked Biden, “Followup question… are you going nuts?” In response, Biden joked, “Look, the reason why I came on the Jimmy Kimmel Show is because I’m not.”

When Biden was asked by Colbert if he believes the criticism he’s facing is fair, the former vice president responded that it’s fair to go after politicians “for anything.” Biden went on to insist his slip-ups were minor in comparison to President Trump’s policies. Although, Colbert took issue with Biden’s attitude concerning a recent gaffe that occurred while the former vice president spoke about awarding a medal to a member of the military.

“Well, they say that the branch of the military was wrong, and the date was wrong, and the act that he was awarded for was wrong, and the medal was wrong,” Colbert reacted. “What position you held at the time was all of those were fact-checked for you and you said that details don’t matter or details aren’t important.”

Biden again dismissed criticism of his mistakes on the campaign trail. “Here’s the deal because I was not talking about me,” Biden told Colbert. “It’s a different thing to say when you’re talking about honoring the bravery or the sacrifice or what other people went through and the essence is absolutely true, the fact that I said I was vice president… I’m not sure that’s relevant, but I don’t get wrong things like, you know, we should lock kids up in cages at the border.”

Colbert didn’t seem completely comfortable with Biden’s dismissal of the controversy. “Some details are relevant,” Colbert said in response to Biden, “because that’s where the devil is—in the details.” Again, Biden brushed off the criticism.
