Former 2016 presidential candidate Bernie Sanders is expected to announce another run for president sometime in February. Hunter Walker, White House reporter for Yahoo News, appeared on CBS to discuss the recent developments with Reena Ninan. Hunter said sources close to Sanders expect the Senator to announce his candidacy in the very near future.

During his interview, Walker said that Sanders was emboldened to make the decision after reviewing early polling data. The data is said to be extremely favorable toward Sanders among several key voting demographics. Sanders would be the most high-profile politician to announce their candidacy so far.

Sanders is the longest-serving independent in congressional history. Sanders served in the US House of Representatives from 1990 until he became a US Senator in 2007. Sanders won each of his congressional elections running as an independent, instead of a Democrat or Republican.

The Democratic Party has embraced Sanders, as the politician’s voting record closely resembles that of any other congressional Democrat. Sanders has been appointed to numerous congressional committees by Democratic leadership. Although Sanders serves as an independent in congress, the Democratic Party has discouraged Democratic candidates from running against him.

The Democratic Party’s embrace of Sanders seemed to be stretched to its breaking point while he was running against Hillary Clinton during the 2016 Democratic presidential primaries. Numerous individuals involved with the primaries have alleged unethical behavior by the Democratic Party and Hillary Clinton’s campaign against the Sanders campaign. Former Democratic Party Chairwoman Donna Brazile published a book in 2017 detailing alleged improper collaboration between the Democratic Party and Clinton’s campaign against Sanders.

When Sanders announces his upcoming presidential campaign, he is expected to run as a Democrat once again. Many Democrats have been highly critical of a third party presidential candidate in 2020, as they perceive it as benefiting President Trump. Former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz has been steadily attacked by Democrats since announcing that he may run for president in 2020 as an independent.
