Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s recent appearance on 60 Minutes certainly wont help mend her reputation as being politically naive. The self described democratic socialist had some serious trouble defending her political positions during the interview. Her biggest gaffe came when interviewer Anderson Cooper criticized her spending plans as unrealistic due to the potential costs. In response to Cooper’s criticism, Ocasio-Cortez called reality “unrealistic.”

Had a Republican made such a comment, they would surely be making headlines today. Instead, the left-leaning media is widely condemning Republicans for criticizing Ocasio-Cortez. Criticism of Ocasio-Cortez, and her socialist ideology, is routinely portrayed as “bullying” by the media.

Considering costly government social programs have caused economic collapse in numerous countries, resulting in millions of deaths, it seems reasonable to debate such policies. Perhaps this is why Democrats and the media have been so protective of Ocasio-Cortez. Although her support for large government spending programs isn’t rare among her Democratic colleagues, her unrefined rhetoric serves to help expose the absurdity and danger of her political positions.

Ocasio-Cortez supports a program that would require the United States to become entirely fueled by renewable energy in 12 years. This is of course an irrational program, which would result in bankrupting the entire nation. Ocasio-Cortez says she would fund her impossible and idiotic plan by increasing taxes. Ocasio-Cortez has advocated raising taxes as high as 70% on the richest Americans.

Not only would Ocasio-Cortez’s plan raise income taxes, it would require many more sacrifices from Americans. Every person in the United States would be required to buy a new car that did not use gasoline, which would essentially amount to forcing every American to buy an expensive new car. Obviously, low income people would be hit the hardest. Anyone without tens of thousands of dollars available to purchase a new car would be banned from driving on the roads.

Her plan would also require every business in the country to adopt the new energy requirements, which would be passed on to the customers via higher prices. All of this would be for nothing, as it is currently physically impossible to power the US entirely using renewable energy. No amount of government spending will change that.

Energy independence will only be achieved by the free market and technological advancement. The government already failed miserably with a similar program when they subsidized ethanol fuel in the early 2000s. The program helped enrich large corporations, while doing absolutely nothing beneficial for the environment.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez may be new to politics, but her socialist political ideology has been around for a long time. She is simply a new face advocating very old ideas. When your entire political ideology is based around a failed economic theory, of course reality will look “unrealistic.”
