According to a recent report from the Daily Beast, at least four Democratic candidates are expressing interest in their own town hall appearances with Fox News following Bernie Sanders’ success earlier this week. The event drew twice the audience of MSNBC and nearly three times the audience of CNN during the same time period on Monday night. Early last month, the DNC banned Fox News from conducting any of the 2020 Democratic debates.

Following the DNC’s decision, many Democrats were highly critical of Sanders prior to his appearance on the network. However, the studio audience was far more accepting of Sanders than many critics were expecting. The high viewership, coupled with the relatively friendly atmosphere, seemed to alleviate the concerns of most skeptics.

Some on the left remained critical of Sanders, even after the success of the event became apparent. Progressive Democrat and Daily Kos founder Markos Moulitsas appeared on MSNBC with Chuck Todd to condemn Sanders for holding the event. Moulitsas admitted the town hall was helpful for Sanders’ campaign, but criticized the politician for not being a team player. Although, that seems like a strange criticism of an individual running against others in an election.

South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg is currently in the process of organizing his own town hall event with Fox News. Communications director for Congressman Tim Ryan’s campaign has said the candidate is willing to appear on Fox News for a town hall event, and added they have already reached out to the network proactively. Senior adviser to former Obama administration official Julian Castro’s 2020 campaign say they are in conversations with the news network as well.

Congressman Eric Swalwell, one of the most recent contenders to enter the race, seems quite eager to appear on Fox News for his own town hall. However, Fox News may not share the same level of interest. His campaign admits they haven’t begun discussions with the network yet, which is likely the result of a lack of interest on Fox’s part. Swalwell’s polling numbers are essentially non-existent, and most of his notoriety appears to center around his past comments advocating the use of nuclear weapons against the United States.

Senator Amy Klobuchar has already confirmed her Fox News appearance for a town hall. The democratic contender’s event will be held in Milwaukee on May 8. As was the case with Bernie Sanders’ town hall, Fox News anchors Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum will host Kobuchar’s event as well.
